The approximately $30,000 in materials used to make the repairs, such as lumber, paint, windows and doors, are purchased through the federal Community Development Block Grant program. The beneficiaries were selected through an application process, and most are disabled and/or elderly, according to the release.
The organizers of the volunteer effort include the First Baptist Church of Covington, the Northshore Baptist Association, Kent Design+Build, and St. Tammany Parish government. Several local churches are supporting the event by providing lunch each day to the volunteers at the work sites. The students will be housed at First Baptist Church of Covington for the week.
“We welcome the World Changers group back to St. Tammany. They have made such a difference in so many people’s lives over the past four years, and we cannot thank them enough,” St. Tammany Parish President Pat Brister said in the release. “Collaborative efforts like these between public, private and faith-based organizations, make our community stronger, improve our quality of life, and benefit everyone involved.”
World Changers is an entity of LifeWay Student Ministries. During projects, students typically spend one week repairing homes in a particular community.
